The expansion of the Jewett City Treatment Plant was deemed to be the Borough's biggest project in a century. The upgrade will spell the end of a state-imposed moratorium on new sewer tie-ins, paving the way for new hook-ups from businesses.
The original plant had been serving the residents for over fifty years processing only 500,000 gallons of sewage per day. The limitations on capacity resulted in excess sewage overflowing into the Quinebaug River. In response to the ongoing problem, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) placed a moratorium on commercial buildings which would not allow any new connections to the sewage plant.
Completed, the new Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) plant can treat up to one million gallons of sewage per day including nitrogen and phosphorous removal. The DEP has since lifted the moratorium which allowed for new businesses to connect to the plant, promoting economic growth in the area.
